Thomas Schneider

Thomas Schneider (born 1972) is the deputy head of the International Affairs Service and the international information society coordinator at the Swiss Federal Office of Communication (OFCOM) in the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC). He studied history, national economics and English literature.

Thomas Schneider is an expert in Internet governance and governance of the information society; particularly media/new media regulations, human rights and consumer protection. He coordinates the Swiss activities with regard to the implementation and followup of the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and represents Switzerland in a number of international fora.

Thomas Schneider has represented Switzerland at the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and has been a regional coordinator in the Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) of the Internet Governance Forum since 2006. He currently represents Switzerland in ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) and was elected in 2014 by ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee to serve as chair of the GAC and GAC board liaison.

Thomas Schneider was one of the initiators in 2008 and is still a co-coordinator of the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG – the European IGF). He is vice-chair of the Council of Europe’s new steering committee on media and the information society (CDMSI) since 2014. Thomas Schneider is also vice-chair of the Council of Europe (CoE) expert group on rights of Internet users and chair of the CoE’s expert group on new media and on human rights in the information society. He has represented Switzerland in the ITU Council Working Group on WSIS since 2005 and co-chaired the ITU Council Working Group on Stakeholder Participation in ITU’s activities related to WSIS.
