Education and professional activities:
Professor Dr. Schnyder studied law at the University of Zurich from where he subsequently gained a PhD.
From 1973 to 1981, he was employed as a research assistant. In 1982, he procured an LL.M. from the University of California, Berkeley. He subsequently became a lecturer at the University of Zurich for one year and completed a research fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law in Hamburg from 1984 to 1987. During this time, he wrote his habilitation thesis, “Law of the Conflict in Economic matters – Special offers and Extra-Territorial Application of Economic Standards with Special Consideration of Market Law”.
Prof. Schnyder also worked for six years as a legal consultant with the Zurich Versicherung AG; thereafter, he was appointed professor of private law at the University of Basel in 1993. In March 2003, he moved to the University of Zurich where he has since been a full Professor of Private and Business Law, International Private and Civil Procedure Law and Comparative Law. Since May 2008, he has also been a consultant at a Zurich law firm.
Parallel to his academic activities, Prof. Schnyder served as vice-president (1994 to 2004) and president (2004 to 2006) of the Federal Commission for the Supervision of Private Insurance. Finally, from the end of 2001 until April 2006, he was a member of the Board of Converium Holding AG.
