Education and professional activities:
Professor Dr. Leo Schürmann studied law at the University of Basel and obtained his Doctorate in 1939.
He began his professional career in 1940 with a clerkship in the High Court of the Canton of Solothurn. He then worked as a legal secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Canton of Solothurn. Thereafter, Professor Schürmann worked as an independent attorney-at-law for four years, until he took up his post as an appellate judge of the High Court for the Canton of Solothurn. He started his political career as a member of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (CVP), for which he held a seat on both the Cantonal Parliament and the National Council.
Professor Schürmann became increasingly popular throughout Switzerland in 1973 as the first price regulator of Switzerland, a position he gave up two years later due to his ascent into the governing board of the Swiss National Bank (SNB).
Professor Schürmann was also chairman of the Military Commission of the Swiss Cartel Commission and of the Commission for Emission Control. From 1981 to 1987, he served as Director-General of the Swiss Radio and Television Corporation (SRG SSR idée suisse). From 1966 to 1987, he was an Extraordinary Professor of economic and administrative law at the University of Zurich.
