Aloïs Troller (1906-1987) was the eminent academic and practicing Swiss intellectual property lawyer of the 20th century. He combined legal practice and theory of intellectual property law, including legal philosophy. He was a legal practitioner in Lucerne as of 1941 and Professor of Law at the University of Fribourg.
Educated at the Universities of Berne, Basel and Fribourg (having studied music and singing as well in Munich), he obtained his doctorate in 1937 and post-doctoral habilitation in 1950 in Fribourg. He was a part-time professor (Titualprofessur) of intellectual property from 1957 to 1976 and of philosophy of law from 1971-1981. He published widely in the field, including the standard Swiss textbook Immaterialgüterrecht 2 vol. 3rd ed. 1983-1985. He was deeply respected in the community, and received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Lund and Lausanne. He chaired the Lucerne Art Society from 1955-1967 and the Lucerne Festival from 1965-1971.
